Fun Ways to Learn the 50 US States with a Random Picker

Memorising fifty states from a list is hard. Learning them through short, random challenges is much easier, and it works for kids and adults.

Start with regions

The random state generator can limit draws to the Northeast, Midwest, South or West. Learn one region at a time, then combine them.

Five quick games

  1. Map race: draw a state and find it on a blank map as fast as you can.
  2. Capital quiz: draw a state, then recall its capital before you reveal it.
  3. Neighbour challenge: name every state that borders the one you drew.
  4. Pairs: draw two states and say which is bigger, further north or further west.
  5. Road trip plan: draw three states and plan a route that connects them.

Make it stick

  • Say the state and capital out loud.
  • Come back to the ones you missed.
  • Use the no-repeat option so you cover all states before seeing any twice.
  • Keep a tally of how many you got right and try to beat it next time.

Outside the US

The country wheel works the same way for world geography. Spin it, find the country on a map and share one fact about it.
